Maintaining a beautiful lawn is a lot of work and can be confusing at times. If problems arise, it can often be tricky to figure out what the best solution is. When something goes wrong with your lawn, there’s usually a clear reason why, but to find it requires an understanding of the plants you’re working with.

Precision Maintenance by Clifford Suppa and Jhesse Jones services commercial and residential lawns in the New York communities of Rockville Centre, Baldwin, Oceanside, and Wantagh in Long Island New York. We’re passionate about lawn and plant care and want to help you achieve a beautiful and thriving lawn.

In our 43-year tenure as a landscape gardening company, we’ve encountered many lawns that need a bit of extra help. We’re easily able to diagnose the issue and recommend and implement the perfect solution.

Three common services we provide for lawns that need a bit of extra help are dethatching, aeration, and seeding.

Dethatching

To understand the process of dethatching (or thatch removal), we should probably explain what thatch is. Thatch is a layer of organic material that lies between soil and grass. It’s made up of things like grass stems and rhizomes that are in the process of decomposition

This is usually a good thing, but in some cases, too much thatch can accumulate which can begin to suffocate your grass and deprive it of necessary nutrients and water. Too much thatch can also cause insect infestations and make it easier for diseases to impact your lawn.

To help control the situation when too much thatch is present, we can come in and remove some of the thatch using tools.

Cliff’s Tips

Most bulbs planted in the fall that flower the following year, will come back year after year.

Aeration

Another service we often provide is lawn aeration. This process involves systematically puncturing holes in your lawn to help oxygen reach the roots more easily. This service is particularly useful in cases where there’s a lot of foot traffic on your lawn. Such frequent travel can cause the grass and thatch layers to get compressed, which prevents nutrients and oxygen from reaching the roots. This can lead to patchy growth and even dead areas where no grass remains at all.

Sometimes it’s difficult for people to know when they may need a service like dethatching or aeration. If you feel like your lawn isn’t growing as it should or your soil is hard to the touch (also look for signs of pooling rainwater), it may be a good idea to schedule a consultation.

In some cases, it may even be necessary to perform dethatching and aeration on the same lawn. This combination is not unusual and together can really help your lawn get the attention it needs. We’ll be able to assess the situation by visiting your property and talking with you about your current lawn care practices and how your lawn is currently being used by members of your household.

Seeding

We also frequently assist our customers by seeding their lawns. This is a service that would be ideal for someone looking to expand their existing green space or to help encourage new growth in areas that may be a bit worse for the wear.

Seeding a lawn has several important steps, and if you commission this service from us here’s what you can expect:

Site preparation
The first thing we’ll do during the seeding process is to prep your lawn area. We will thatch the area we are seeding as well as aerate and cut your lawn.

Soil preparation
Once the entire site has been prepped, we’ll focus on the soil. This process is detailed and scientific, but in short, we’ll help achieve optimal pH and add necessary nutrients.

Plant seed
Next, we’ll plant the seed using a seed spreader or by hand spreading.
We also offer slit seeding.  Slit seeding provides a uniform distribution of the seed and places the seed directly into the soil.  The placement is achieved by controlling the depth of the grooves as well as using a crisscross pattern.  This technique assures that the seed has settled below the soil.

Water
Finally, we’ll water the new seeds and walk you through a schedule that you should adhere to for best growth results.
